Baliem Valley Festival

The baliem festival it self will be held on every august or september. This festival is so unique. The main point of interest of the festival will be the massive tribal attraction involving different tribes living on the villages around Baliem Valley such as Dani, Lani and Yali tribe. All tribes group will deliver their envoy to attend the festival while bringing all tribes attributes, kotekas, art and craft. The baliem festival is a right chance to observe the rich cutlure of the hinterland. Baliem valley area is mainly occupied by three main big clan, namely Dani, Yali and Lani. They have different phisical feature, culture and way of life as well as unique custom. manyu kinds of tribal attraction will be perfomed by the stone-age tribe group. Among them are the Mocked War, Pig Feast, Earth Cooking ceremony, traditional mouth harpa, etc.

Baliem valley festival irian jayaEach tribe group will come over with their own identity. Here you will see clear difference among them refer to their dressing. The Dani man only use small koteka (penis gourd / penis cover), the Lani tribes use bigger Koteka, their body is much bigger than the average Dani tribe, while the Yali has long slender Koteka with rattan belt corved waist lenght.

 LANI TRIBE

DANI TRIBE

YALI TRIBE

Although now modernized, the Dani still strongly adhere to their traditions and customs, most notably the dress of the men. Even in this cool mountain climate, men wear only a penis gourd, known as koteka, though complemented with elaborate headdress of bird of paradise or cassowary feathers, while the women wear grass or fern fiber skirts  (sali or saly) slung around the waist. And to carry pigs or the harvest of sweet potatoes, women carry a string bag, called noken, slung from their forehead.

To defend their villages or to raid others to avenge for tribe members killed, the Dani practiced regular warfare. However, anthropologists note that the “Dani wars” are more a display of prowess and opulence of dress and decoration rather than an all out war to kill the enemy. Dani warfare displays competence and exuberance, rather than the wish to kill.  Weapons used are long spears, measuring 4.5 meters, and bows and arrows. Most often, therefore, there are more wounded than killed, and the wounded are quickly carried off the field.

Nowadays, Dani mock battles are held yearly at the Baliem Valley Festival in Wamena during the month of August .  At this feast, which has as its highlight the mock battles among the tribes, the Dani, Yali, and Lani send their best warriors to the arena, wearing their best regalia. The festival is complemented with a Pig Feast, Earth cooking and traditional music and dance.

By attending the massive Baliem Valley Festival, visitors will have a rare chance to learn and experience firsthand the different traditions of each tribe participating in the Festival without having to make the difficult trek to their compounds deep in the hinterland of West Papua.

And the song of war begins. At the modern era, many people from papua has become the popular singer in Indonesia.

Traditional War dance, man and woman, move their feet with rhytmics tribal sound.

Each tribal warriors bring their own supporters. These young girls dance to amplify the warring spirit in the staged war dance.

The Baliem Valley Festival itself is normally held in the beginning of August, facing the Indonesian national independence day. The main attraction of the festival is the massive mock tribal war involving various tribes living in the vicinity of Baliem Valley, such as Dani, Lani and Yali tribes.

The Lani Tribe

The Lani are – like their neighbors, the Dani - experienced farmers and are using a highly sophisticated irrigation system to produce mainly Sweet Potatoes, Tobacco, Beans, Taro, Spinach, Sugar Cane and Bananas.Their villages in a beautiful surrounding southeast of Wamena are larger than the  small compounds of the Dani and the Yali.

The Lani men, who are more stubby than the Dani, wear thick kotekas (penis gourds), which also serve as a “handbag”, a case for tobacco and valuables. Men sometimes wear hairnets, but the Lani extensively use bird feathers as decoration. Quite often a feather crown is worn even when the men are dressed in western clothes. The women wear short grass skirts, but like everywhere in the valley tend to wear western clothes more and more today.
Like their Dani and Yali neighbors, the women carry everything – like vegetables, small pigs and even their small children – in net-bags across their backs.
Lanis inhabit a smaller part of the Baliem valley, but this is not less beautiful and give uncounted opportunities for trekking. Since the Lani region is not visited as often as the Dani region, only few tourists will be seen during our treks.

The people here still keep their own tradisional way of life until today. The Mamberamo River is situated in the east-west forest of Papua. For many years this area has been almost totally closed off. Many maps mark the basin of the river Mamberamo as “Strictly prohibited territory“. Mamberamo, Mamberamo… it nags at my mind all the time. The closeness of the area evokes curiosity and desire for more knowledge. Why is it so? Why is Mamberamo so guarded? Is it because crocodiles are hunted there? Is it because of the dangerous aborigines? I don’t like unanswered questions. Last year we organized an expedition into the Mamberamo territory. It succeeded. We managed to contact the right people, get acquainted, and finally obtain the unobtainable permits. We are there. We headed towards the mountains, and sailed up the river. At the end of our expedition, we found the warriors of the Mamberamo River. The success of this expedition challenges us to return! Mamberamo enriched our voyages with new possibilities. Only there did we find what we had been searching for the ten years of our expeditions in West-Papua.
